It came and went so quickly!!

I can't believe Jenna's birthday and her party are already over!! It went by in such a blur!! Once I have a chance to reflect on the weekend and let it sink in, I'll blog some more about it. But for now, here are a TON of birthday photos!!! (if you have any trouble logging in, email me and I'll send them to you)

Also, here is an incredibly long video of Jenna scooting about on her new tricycle! Obviously you won't watch the whole thing, cause it's long, but it's cute to watch a snippet of! (I could edit it down to make it shorter but I'm lazy!) I vividly remember having videos of me and my brother riding around on our trikes/bikes/big wheels (do they still make those?)/wagons, etc as kids, so I feel like this video will be a timeless classic that Jenna will always love looking back on!! Look at her go!! (Wow, I just watched the video on the blog and it's a shame that it gets so compressed and blurry, you can't even see her face! stupid youtube! it looks great and crystal clear in the original!)

One Year Ago Today... Part 2 (long, but with pictures!)

So when I left you yesterday, Josh and I were going to sleep around midnight. About 2am, I woke up feeling minor contractions... I pushed the nurses button and within minutes I was in horrible pain... so much for that epidural. They came in and tried injecting all sorts of drugs into the epidural, but they wouldn't believe me that it wasn't working. From 2-4am is sort of a big blur of delirium and pain, but Josh likes to tease me that at one point I asked the nurses for ice packs to put on my stomach, thinking that would help the literally gut wrenching pain of the contractions. Nothing funny about it! He was super supportive though... as I later said, much to his chagrin, he was "surprisingly" good during the rough parts.

During this miserable 2 hours, a lovely resident with a horrible bedside manner told me that they weren't going to take out a perfectly good epidural (clearly it wasn't perfectly good) and put in a new one, and that I should suck it up, women had been delivering babies without epidurals for centuries (Bad Hospital Experience, Part 3). I wanted to smack her, but she controlled the flow of pain medicine, so I was pitifully nice and begged for more... finally they gave me epidural # 3 of the night (before the week was over, I had received epidurals 4-7... all of which came 4 days after Jenna was born). Once the terror subsided, we rested for another few minutes, but before long the nurses said we were ready, it was time to push. From 5am-6:30 or so, I pushed while hooked up to an oxygen mask. Jenna's heart rate was dropping, and I needed to keep the oxygen mask on to keep her safe. Had things taken any longer, they were threatening that I'd need a c-section.

Then, suddenly, the nurses screamed that we needed Dr. Herbst immediately. Of course, no one could find him. Being that he's a family friend, and I knew my VERY chatty dad was in the waiting room, I asked someone to go check and see if my dad was tying him up. No deal. They tried paging him, but he had been on call overnight and left his pager somewhere in the hospital. Well, she was coming out, like it or not, so they started looking around the hospital to find another doctor. At the last minute, Dr. Herbst came rushing in. At 6:41am, exactly 24 hours and 1 minute after we checked into our room, Jenna Diane Greenwald made her grand entrance.
Knowing she was a girl, that part was a bit anti-climatic. Imagine our surprise, however, after watching 24 hours of a CNN story mentioned in yesterday's post, and having no redheads in either of our families, when the first words Dr. Herbst said were "she's a redhead!!" Sure enough, Jenna was born with a full head of red hair. Perhaps it was a sign... CNN was doing its part to tell us the world needed more redheads. And once she was born, there is no question that the world instantly became a better place.

Jenna, the past 365 days have been the best of our lives. You have brought so much joy to so many people, your smile and good nature bring out the best in everyone around you, and your daddy and I are so proud of the little girl you have become. We feel so lucky that we get to guide you on your journey, that we are in charge of helping you forge your way through life, and even better, we get to tag along for the ride. I have no doubt that every experience I've ever had, both good and bad, was to prepare me to teach you and guide you, and I look forward to every joy and challenge along the way. You can always count on us for support, guidance and most importantly, abounding love. Happy first birthday, little girl. We love you more today than yesterday, and we look forward to a million more tomorrows.

Stop taking pictures and feed me breakfast or I'm going to eat my crib!!

Goofing off with daddy while we got ready for work

Pointing to her Baby Boost tv show and dancing in bed

Being silly in the sofa tunnel at Mom Mom and Pop Pops

Beach Pictures

A few pictures from the beach... There were a LOT so if you want to see the entire album in full, click HERE.

One of my favorite pictures...

Get me off this dirty sand!!

What happens when the camera autofocuses on the flower... blurry family

Where Jenna slept all weekend. Just kidding. She was obsessed with climbing in and out of this TV cabinet, though. It was seriously her favorite place in the condo!

Note- Josh is not THAT much taller than me! We're on the beach and he's standing on the higher end of an incline!

Taste of the Beach

I've yet to begin uploading photos, but here's a quick video clip of Jenna, half-buried in the sand, and FINALLY starting to touch the sand. Most of the time at the beach she acted like the sand was quick-sand, and stayed on our blanket at all costs. She even worked her ab muscles... if you were holding her and tried to put her on the beach, she lifted her legs up to avoid touching down. Like we've said all along... she's an indoor baby!! Here she is enjoying the sand...

One Year Ago... Part 1

One year ago today, Josh and I were sitting in our room at Sinai (with my dad, intermittently) watching contractions go by on the monitor and watching endless repeats of a CNN story telling us that redheads were going extint because they weren't marrying one another, and that, in so many years, there would be no more redheads... Funny, we thought nothing of the story at the time.

We arrived at Sinai at 6:00am, and were checked into our room at 6:40am. I was scheduled to be induced, but because I was already having frequent contractions, they decided not to start the induction medication, but just to see how things went. We hung out, relaxed, watched TV, etc... My dad was wearing his pink polo shirt in anticipation of meeting the newest little girl in the family. Time dragged on rather slowly, and at 8pm they said I still hadn't progressed enough, and that we would be there overnight. I got upset, I wasn't feeling well and was tired... I wanted to meet "her" already. That's when the nasty night nurse told me to suck it up, that some women come in and don't have babies for 3 days, and that it was too bad. Bad hospital experience part 1.

Later that night, Josh and I were watching either the season finale, or close to it, of Entourage... It runs from 10-10:30pm. at about 10:25, I felt that "pop" that I've heard so much about, and sure enough, my water had broken. We called for the nurse, and that's when the fun began. Poor Josh, he later told me that all he could think about at the time was "Damn, I'm going to miss the end of Entourage!!"

Dr. Herbst was at the hospital, and stopped by to check on us... At 11, he offered to let me have an epidural, to head off the serious pain... I happily obliged. Ah, if only the epidural experience ended there!! Note to self, never let a nurse anesthetist on the midnight shift deliver an epidural... that's a story in an of itself (Bad hospital experience part 2). Once I was fully medicated, however, Josh and I tried to get some sleep, knowing that soon the real fun would begin... And begin it did. But... that's a story for tomorrow... Jenna's first birthday!!

In the meantime, we just got back from the beach, and I have TONS of pictures to post!! stop by later!

Quarry Fan

Jenna is working hard to convince us to move to the quarry! We had dinner at Jasmine with Mike Melissa and Logan tonight, and Jenna had a ball... not so much in the restaurant, she was tired and cranky, but afterwards we took her outside and she has never walked more!! She ran around, LOVING being out in the open air, having new things and people to see, and having so much space! She walked everywhere with her arm stretched out, pointer finger pointing, showing us all the cool sights.

Josh has long wanted to move to the quarry, so after we put Jenna to bed, he said she she's now in his corner and it's 2 against 1. I told him she just likes being outside. But man, she was awfully cute out there tonight!!

51 weeks

Jenna is 51 weeks old. One week from today, she will be 1. How is it possible that she's gone from this tiny little baby getting ready to leave the hospital:

To this big girl walking around the house??

Indoor Baby Part 2

Several months ago, Josh and I took Jenna to the park, where we discovered she was more of an "indoor" baby... not so much into nature. This weekend solidified that, though I must say, she gets it from her parents. We had a great time at the family picnic for Josh's office, but the Jenna shared our sentiments on the hayride, and could not get off the pony fast enough, even though the tiny thing barely stood 3 feet tall!! Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure...

Mommy, I'm not sure how I feel about this pony...

Seriously... I really don't think this pony riding thing is for me...

Alright, that's it, I'm just going to scream bloody murder till you take me off this thing!!

Ahh, much better, I prefer having a fence separate me from the pony... Thanks, Aunt Jessica!!

Even better, watching and pointing at the pony from the safety of Aunt Jessica's arms!

Oh, great, now I'm stuck on a hayride!?!

Don't you know this stuff is itchy to sit on, and inhaling diesel fuel from the tractor is NOT healthy for a little girl?? what were you thinking??

Okay, Okay, I guess the end result (the lake) was pretty, but I'd rather play with daddy's glasses!

Wait... I have to get BACK on the hayride??

At least I got to see a real cow!! and it's true, "the cow in the meadow goes moooo!"

Walking with Mom Mom and Aunt Jessica back to see the ponies now that I'm finally off that stinking hayride!

See ya later!!

Molars Bite.

A week or so ago, Jenna uncharacteristically woke up in the middle of the night crying. The next morning, on the way to daycare, I wondered it something was up. I pried her jaws open to feel around her gums (she hates this) and sure enough, her back molars, at least on the right side, are starting to pop through. Unlike the 6 teeth she already has, these are the big 4 sided painful teeth, and they've been torturing us as much as they've apparently been torturing her.

Jenna's been going to sleep at her normal time, but without fail at 3-4am she wakes up screaming. The teeth are moving VERY slowly and are only just breaking the skin, so I have a feeling we're going to be in teething hell for the foreseeable future. I just hope she's feeling better by her party!!! (otherwise we'll all be sleepwalking zombies!)

Tons of Pictures!!

Tons of pictures from the weekend!!! Here's the birthday boy at My Gym with his mommy and daddy... When I was pregnant, I remember talking to Tracee about how crazy it would be when her baby (Jake) was 1, cause that would mean my baby would almost be here... now here we are, Jake just turned 2, and Jenna is about to turn 1... how does that happen?

Here's the birthday boy, riding out on his chariot with celebratory bubbles.

Here I am with a new friend... we were dressed in opposite outfits, blue overalls and pink shirt for me, pink overalls and blue shirt for her. We must have gotten into the opposite thing, cause we put ourselves on the bar in this position, each holding on with the opposite hands. Too cute.

This is Ethan. He's only about 4 months younger than me, but I look like a GIANT next to him in this picture! Attack of the giant Jenna!

I LOVED this ball and could have stood here pushing it all day...

Wait, what do you mean I have to share the ball with the other babies?

Now I have to share with TWO babies? that's it, I'm fed up, this is ridiculous...

I'm gettin' out of this joint, where's my ride...

C'mon, faster! How do I make this thing go!!

Honk Honk! Get outta my way!!

The party was a blast, and maybe mommy will take me back to My Gym soon!!
The day before, mommy and daddy took me to the shoe store. Here I am sitting in my high chair, eating lunch, wearing my new big girl shoes.

Then on Sunday night we went out to dinner with Grandpa and Antonia. They brought flowers, and daddy said I was prettier than any rose he'd ever seen.

Pink ladies... we did not plan this.
Practicing walking with my heavy new shoes. It's not as easy as it sounds!
I'm outta here... see you next time!

Fun weekend!

We had such a great weekend! The weather was absolutely gorgeous, so on Saturday, Josh and I took Jenna on a walk to Egyptian Pizza for lunch, and then to buy some spiffy new shoes that she's yet to figure out how to walk well in. Later that night, we decided to be brave and took her to Linwoods for dinner (early, and we sat outside). She was a champ, and flirted with the waiter and neighboring diners as we sat and enjoyed a great meal. I learned that Jenna does NOT like sea bass. Good to know. Josh took some great pictures of Jenna with his new iPhone, which I'd upload if I had any idea how.

Sunday we celebrated Jake Fruman's 2nd birthday at my gym! Jenna had much more fun this time around (we went back in May, but she was too young to really enjoy the activities) and I'll probably try to sign her up for a class or two as she gets a bit older. Later that afternoon, we went with Aunt Jessica to the McDonogh pool, and Jenna showed us wimpy adults how to jump right in, even though the water was freezing! Sunday night we went to Outback with grandpa and Antonia, and Jenna had a ball throwing coasters on the floor and waving to people at other tables. Sometimes I feel like a puppeteer with her... I say "Hi" or "bye" and without fail she automatically waves... I say "yay" and she automatically claps... I say "how big is Jenna" and her arms fly up in the air. Oh well, her tricks are usually accompanied by a huge smile, so I know she's having fun!!

Pictures from this weekend to follow tonight or tomorrow!

Toddling Toddler

Between 9-10 mos, Jenna started taking a step or two, here and there... nothing consistent, though. Finally, right at 11 months, something clicked, and she grasped the whole "one foot in front of the other gets me where I want to go" concept. Here she is toddling around the (very messy Jenna-destroyed) basement over the weekend. Because she only wants to get down and walk when we're out, Josh and I took her to stride rite to buy her some shoes over the weekend... that's another story. I underestimated how hard it would be for her to figure out how to walk with shoes on!! Here she is, barefoot, doing her thing... (the odd talking in the background is the TV)

It's funny...

Jenna was born on a Monday. I loved having a ___ day old baby. The Monday following her birth, I was sad that she was 1 week. Having a "one week old" didn't sound as little as having a "6 day old," etc. Back then, being 1 week old seemed old to me. Today, Jenna is 49 weeks and two days old. Three weeks from today, she will be one. As she approaches one year, it seems so silly to look back and think how old I thought she was as she approached one week.

Tons of Pictures!

Just over five years ago, on July 4, 2003, Josh and I met on a blind date at Starbucks. After dating only a few weeks, he asked me to join him at a "BBQ" at his parents house. Wow, I thought. Meeting the parents so soon. Of course I said yes. So I show up that August afternoon, thinking I'm going to some neighborhood barbeque and I'll meet his parents. The place was packed... and as I'm making small talk with the "neighbors" it slowly dawns on me that they're all introducing themselves as so-and-so Greenwald... i.e. the "neighborhood BBQ" that I thought I was attending was really an annual summer party with Josh's entire extended family! Slightly overwhelming, considering I'd known him so briefly, but I had a great time, and the Greenwald summer crabcake party has, of course, continued as a yearly event. This time last year I was hugely pregnant with Jenna, but this year she made her first actual appearance... Never one to fade into the background, she made it her job to entertain everyone and steal the show. The earlier pictures are of Jenna in her party dress. Most of the pictures are from after I had already changed her into her PJ's and put her to bed... which lasted all of 3 minutes before she was back downstairs stealing the show...

Hanging out with Cousin Andrea

Daddy and Aunt Jessica

Playing with Grandpa and Antonia, when someone asked "How big is Jenna?" "SO big!"

Waving to the crowd

Please, Sharon, I know you have more cheerios in there... PLEASE give me just one more!! I'll even make silly faces, I'll do anything you want... just one... more... cheerio!!

Making pucker faces while Mommy and Daddy try to get just one nice family picture. Since I didn't want to cooperate, Mommy and Daddy had the audacity to take a family picture WITHOUT me!! SELFISH!!

My new trick... "How old is Jenna?" (practicing for her upcoming birthday) (In the 2nd pic, grandpa is practicing with her, she's holding out the number 1 on her right hand, while grabbing grandpa's hand with her left)

Just being silly

Cousin Steven feeding me dinner. He's my new friend for life.

We were also celebrating Great Aunt Joyce and Great Uncle Melvin's Birthdays!! Happy Birthday!! Maybe next year someone will let me have some cake :-(

I stayed up so late for the party that my schedule was off and I didn't sleep well on Saturday. But the good news is, I woke up in a great mood on Sunday and had so much fun at the pool with Mommy, Daddy and Aunt Jessica!! Here I am playing on the back deck in the beautiful weather.

How big is Jenna?? SO big!!

Finally, on Monday night, daddy's friend Rebecca came into town with my boyfriend Ben. Ben's mommy took some pictures of us at dinner, but Mommy doesn't have them yet. The only one Mommy has is of me and Ben playing with my flashcards. Please excuse my state of undress, I was on my way to bed.

It was a great weekend, and over way too fast!!! Thanks, Mom Mom and Pop Pop, for the fun party, can't wait till next year when I can enjoy the food a bit more (though the raw veggies were pretty yummy. Mommy wonders how many other 11 month olds wander around the house eating raw red peppers... hmmm)
